Volkow and her coauthors start out with a disclaimer.”we do not claim that obesity is the result of food addiction”. But despite this, they go on to argue that the two conditions have an awful lot in common. The key to both …
Addictive foods are obvious!
They are the ones we can’t stop eating. Of course these experts would come to that conclusion. Because before obesity there was no food addiction. And before food addiction there was no dieting. It has taken us only 40 years to go from a majority of slim healthy people. To a majority of fat, unhealthy food addicts.
It doesn’t take a genius to put two and two together. Everybody theorizes and debates the rights and wrongs of food addiction. Nobody is talking about a cure! Now that is something that’s truly hard to understand, until you realize: We have a massive diet and food industry, solely dependent on our food addiction. You think that’s a bit of a stretch? Not at all. The food industry has simply copied the tobacco industry. They have been a good example, because they have promoted and profited from an addiction for a hundred years.
There is no reason the food industry can’t do the same. They already count on parents to pass on the addiction to the next generation. This is an insidious, ugly addiction. The only question we should be asking is how to cure it for good. But that is not a popular solution. So much better to analyse and theorize than to take action and do something about it.
